Our Bargain Wine Picks of the Week – February 28
Tired of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris/Grigio? You need to try some Albariño wine. This one is among the best of the Spanish Albariño’s I have tried under the $15 mark. It has aromas and flavors of citrus, mostly lemon, touch of lime and perfect acidity in the mouth. Continue reading →
Bargain Wine Alert – 6 Luca 2008 Malbec
This wine has a local connection. The owner of this label is Laura Catena, the daughter of the famed Nicolas Catena, considered to be the Robert Mondavi of Argentine wine. Laura Catena lives in San Francisco and is an emergency room doctor and professor at UCSF. Continue reading →
Our Bargain Wine Picks of the Week – February 21
I know we mostly review wines under $20 but this one is an amazing wine value. It drinks like a $50 bottle of wine. The wine has beautiful colors and intense aroma and is filled with delicious flavors. Continue reading →
BevMo 5-Cent Wine Sale Spring 2011 – The Good and the Bad
I have dissected the BevMo sale previously (read article) trying to figure out if the sale is just a gimmick or if there are some bargains to be had. I am convinced that in the mix of these 200 wines there are several good wines at bargain prices but also many wines that are to be avoided. The problem is how do you know what is good or bad. Here is what I like and don’t like at the current Spring BevMo 5 Cent Sale. Continue reading →
Bargain Alert 5 – Rabbit Ridge Allure de Robles $4.99 at Trader Joe’s
The winemaker is Erich Russell who is also the founder of this winery. Rabbit Ridge used to be on Westside Road in the Russian River wine country of Sonoma County but a few years ago moved to a beautiful new winery in Paso Robles. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah. At least 50 to 60 percent is Grenache, then Mourvedre at 20 to 30%, and the rest Syrah. Continue reading →
Our Bargain Wine Picks of the Week – February 14
Later this week we do a post dissecting the BevMo 5 Cent Sale. In the meantime this is an amazing price for the Trumpeter Malbec. Even at $12.99 the price is good. In this case buying two brings the price down to $6.52 a bottle. My goodness! This is a very smooth wine with balanced fruit flavors. It lacks complexity but at this price it is a lot of bang for the buck. 88 Points Continue reading →

Paso Robles Albertsons – The Place to Shop for Wines
This Albertsons supermarket in Paso Robles on Niblick Road has the very best wine department I have been to in any large store. The wine shelves are stocked with thousands of wine bottles from the wineries of the Paso Robles area. No other supermarket that I know of comes close to offering this wide a selection of local wines. Continue reading →
Our Bargain Wine Picks of the Week – February 7
This wine will sell out fast. This is the best wine I have tasted in recent months. I am totally blown away by this beautiful Rhone wine at this ridiculously low price. What I love about this wine are the many flavors you experience in the mouth and the huge finish that seems to linger forever. Very delicious! I ordered half a case from K&L Wines, just getting my order in before their allocation sold out. Continue reading →
Bargain Wine Alert – 4
Safeway has an ad in today’s Sunday San Francisco Chronicle for several wines on sale. The best deal in my estimation is the one for Domaine Chandon for $11.70 a bottle if you buy six and have your Safeway Card. These selected varietals include the entry levels of Domaine Chandon Brut, Rosé, and Riche (my favorite). Continue reading →
Bargain Wine Alert – Ruston Sauvignon Blanc at Trader Joe’s
While shopping at TJ’s on Monday, I spotted the Ruston 2008 Sauvignon Blanc on the shelf for $6.99. It has no UPC code on the label so the checker had to ask for a price. I chilled the wine for about an hour and a half before trying a sip or two. Wow! What an amazing Sauvignon Blanc. Continue reading →
