BevMo 5 Cent Sale begins anew for 2012 – Some Recommendations

BevMo 5 Cent SaleSo here we go again, sifting through some 345 wines attempting to find some sure-fire wine bargains in the latest BevMo 5-Cent Sale. The sale is currently in full swing as of the date of this post. By and large, it seems to be the same fare offered with a few additions. As usual there are many obscure labels rated by only Wilfred Wong and no other wine critic. Well, maybe I found a couple of wines that had ratings by W.S. or W.E. or somebody else. If you dig deep enough, there are a handful of excellent values.

In the current sale, these are the wines that we can recommend based on past purchases and tastings. The listed prices are for the average cost of one bottle when you buy two bottles.

  • Bonterra Rose 09 – $7.02

Best Strategy for Successful BevMo 5-Cent Shopping
Labels like Powder Keg may be good, but where else are they sold but BevMo? BevMo has an exclusive (Vineyard Partner) arrangement with the producer. Check the Cellar Tracker for reviews from other wine drinkers. Check Wine-Searcher to compare prices. For many of the BevMo labels, you will not find competitors.

Go to your BevMo store with a friend and buy the wines together. This way you don’t get stuck with an extra bottle of wine that turned out not to be to your liking.

  1. Al Stanbridge says:

Went to the Burlingame Ave. store this morning and picked up a case each of the Guenoc Claret and the Vigilance Cimarron. Always good choices. However, they did not have the De Loach Chard or the Rock Rabbit Saugvigon Blanc. The person who helped me was not familiar with either of these wines at that store.

    • Joe says:

      Hi Allan,

Both of those reds are terrific especially at that price. The BevMo website shows inventory at the various stores. Talk to you very soon.

  2. Tuk says:

The Cotes Du Tauch Fitou is on sale for about $8 a bottle at BevMo. Pretty good for the price.

  3. Callista says:

The BevMo Five-Cent sale comes with a guarantee. If you do not like the wine, bring back BOTH BOTTLES (one empty, one full or one partially empty and the other full) and your receipt and you’ll get your money back. If you only bring back ONE bottle (empty or full or partial) you’ll only get 1/2 credit.

    I’ve returned wine several times.

    • Joe says:

This is good to know. I suspect that most folks just don’t get around to returning a bottle of wine to BevMo that is to their disliking. They should!

  5. Bruce says:

I’ve returned it without a receipt, but the cork had crumbled and I had had it for a year.

  6. B. Burke says:

    Hi

    Las Rocas Grenache$6
    Omaka Springs SB $7.5
    Ruffino Il Ducale 10.
    Chalone Pinot Noir 10.

All of these wines are half what they actually cost in other stores. Not some made up Bevmo price. Futhermore none of these wines are from “Exclusive Imports” which is either owned by Bevmo (like Wilfred Wong) or some such connection. Steer clear of these wines without personal experience, as they are generally not a great deal and are actually how i think Bevmo is able to afford to bo the five cent sale in the first place. Sometimes a better way to go is to look for 40% off shelf tags for end of vintage. If you are willing to pay $25, you can get a truly memorable wine. Look for Bourdeaux from the 04, 06 vintages. These were overshadowed by 2005′s and the highly anticipated 09′s and 10′s.

    Happy Hunting
