Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $5 – Bargain Pick of the Week

The Vintage Wine Tasting Club Bargain Wine Picks – October 3

Pascual Toso 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon – $4.48 Cost Plus World Market – Joe’s Pick
This is an astounding price for a Cabernet Sauvignon wine that is very tasty. This wine comes from the Mendoza area of Argentina and is produced by one of Argentina’s finest wineries, Pascual Toso. I have long been a fan of the Pascual Toso Malbec and have previously picked the latest vintage of this Malbec as the “Wine of the Week”. This Cabernet really delivers and could easily sell in the $15 to $20 range. The characteristics of this wine are aromas of berries, cassis, spice and vanilla. It is medium bodied with very soft tannins and has a nice finish. It is on the lighter side for a Cabernet, but for the price it really is an outstanding value.

Pascual Toso Cabernet Sauvignon

Through the month of October the Cost Plus World Market is having a “Red Wine Sale” and 200 of their red wines are reduced in price. Plus, if you buy four you get an additional 10% off each bottle. For the Pascual Toso, the regular price at the World Market is $9.99 and with the promo sale you save $5.01 and then an additional 50 cents if you buy four bottles or more (mix and match). That brings the price down to $4.48. I did a search on Wine-Searcher to compare the price of this wine at other wine shops. The prices ranged from $7.93 to $14.34. This is a terrific deal and a chance to stock up on a wine that will carry you through the fall and winter months. Delightful! 88 Points

Paco & Lola 2010 Albariño – $13.99 Costco – Joe’s Pick
I previously reviewed the 2009 back in February and now the 2010 vintage is on the shelves. Comparing my notes, this one is very similar in characteristics. One big difference I notice in the 2010 vintage is a fuller mouth feel. This is an interesting aspect of an Albariño wine and it adds character to this already delicious wine. This wine has lemon and lime characteristics, nice acidity, and is a perfect match with seafood. Grill up some shrimp or fish Tapas and enjoy a glass of this delicious wine. 89 Points

Checklist
In case you missed my previous post, Vintage Tasting member Ray developed a checklist for organizing your own wine tasting event. We are hoping to get wine tasting groups organized around the country to conduct wine tastings and post their results here on GCV. What a great way to share our bargain wine discoveries.

I went to Cost Plus WM today and the Pascual Toso was $7.99. Maybe not all stores have the sale. I did pick up a couple of wines they have on end of vintage sale.

On Thursday I am heading back to my Cost Plus WM and I will check into this. Maybe each store has a different promo. I went to the Hillsdale store in San Mateo.

Thanks Joe. While you’re at it, check their end of vintage shelf. I picked up a 2007 Capestrano Montepulciano D’Abruzzo for $4.98. I have not drank it yet but it seems to get high 80′s on Cellar Tracker. They also have some Temecula wines on sale from popular wineries there like South Coast.

I did make it back to Cost Plus today and indeed the sign for the Pascual Toso Cab says $7.99. However, when the bottle is scanned the price is reduced $5.01 from the full price of $9.99. I ask their wine guy why and he could not give me a definite answer. He says the wine is a closeout and hence the big discount. Again my total was $4.48. On the Capestrano Montepuliciano, they were sold out and will be getting any additional bottles of this vintage. I will post more thoughts on this sale on Thursday.
