#CabernetDay is Here – September 1, 2011

Today, September 1st, is CabernetDay. Wineries and wine enthusiasts in regions throughout the wine world are celebrating this day in many different ways. Here at GoodCheapVino.com, we want to celebrate CabernetDay by tasting Cabernet wines under the $20 range.

We are gathering a small group of close friends, each bringing an under-$20 bottle of Cabernet to share with our group. I’m cooking up Thomas Keller’s rendition of Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon. The sauce is Cabernet based and thus right in tune with the theme of this day. I have a few bargain Cabernets picked out to serve with what I certainly hope is a scrumptious dinner.

#CabernetDay – We are putting the finishing touches on this dinner meal for our Cabenetday dinner party. Way too much prep for this dish. We used 3 bottles of Cab to make the wine reduction sauce. It should be delicious!

i appreciate the large photo, and can see the labels, for the most part, but a list would be nice as well. Vintage, etc.

Thanks, and have a great CabDay!

      David,
Thanks for the comment. I will get a list of out top wines out within the next couple of days. You also have a happy CabDay.

    ’02 Husch from Mendocino delicious.

  4. Dar says:

I don’t know where to begin. There are too many bottles!

  5. Marcia says:

Rancho Sisquoc tastes kind of sour. I don’t like it!

  6. marcia says:

’02 Mondavi very smooth and delicious.

  7. Marcia Allegretti says:

Rodney Strong is Smooth and very good.

  8. Jay says:

Really like the ’09 Pitray and the ’08 Franciscan.

  9. Ray says:

The ’02 Mondavi was delicious. Unfotunately it will probably cost more than the $20 it originally cost. Beautiful nose, nice acidity, and great finish.

  10. Mary Beltran says:

    Mondavi 2002 is smooth,
full, goes down really easily! My favorite out of four tasted.

  11. Jay says:

The 08 BV tastes a little off to me, and I didn t like the ’08 Rodney Strong either

  12. Mike says:

my favorite was the 2002 Mondavi. complex and smooth with round tannins and layered Cabernet in the nose.. 2nd was the 2002 husch Mendocino, also balanced and very smooth, very well made and ripe tasting. 3rd in my opinion was an inexpensive Bordeaux at Costco, chateau de pit ray, from castillon cotes de Bordeaux.. not heavy but so easy to drink, and has real claret quality. overall a very good start to Cabernet day.
did you know today is also temperanillo day also!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Jim says:

my bottom three are chat. pit ray, lamadrid, and rancho sisquoc. they are lighter, less focused, and missing something in the mid palate. but that is just me, I really like a more massive and fruitlet set of flavors.

  14. kris says:

fantastic selection! Mondavi and Rodney Strong were the most powerful, and with a bite of tri tip they were complete. The Rancho Sisquoc was very different, all the American wines were consistently good. How lucky can we be to have such a fine variety, all available, all so affordable. yum!

  15. Jim C says:

The bargain of the group, altho not the quality of the more elite labels, is the Elena
    Cabernet 2008, a BevMo 2 for. 1.
at $16.00. for 2. A heck of a value and it tastes like a cab.

  16. Ray says:

I agree with Jim C re: Elena. Not something that might be readily identified as a Cab in a blind tasting but smooth, full and at that price, a definite bargain.
