Good Cheap Vino

"Grocery outlook"is a real cut-rate supermarket. But before you turn up your nose, go through the wine selections. As one who always is looking for the super-bargains, I've bought a lot of wine there that could most charitably noted as fairly good (being very charitable) cooking wine. But what makes continuing to buy there fun is that occasionally you find a really good buy. Here's one I got today (another big problem is even when I rush home to try the new ones out, they are frequently sold out when I get back)
So they are having a special on 'Au," an Australian wine. I'm currently sipping a glass of the Au cabernet that I just bought. It is very drinkable! The price was $2.99!! That's not bad! I would say I'd have been happy to pay $10-$16 for this wine, and I've paid more for some that I wouldn't put in this category.. So explore, but be beware. Most of what I've purchased there was --- yuch.

Bob, I had lunch today with the wine buyer for the Grocery Outlet. I'm convinced there are some blockbuster bargain wines in Grocery Outlet wine shelves. I bought an assorted case today and will taste over the next few weeks. I will report any great values.

One current BARGAIN is the Hardys Nottage Hill 2006 Cabernet Shiraz. 55% Cab/45% Shiraz. at $2.99!. Unlike most inexpensive Aussies, this one lacks the rough coursness. Instead, the wine shows good fruit, varietal character and balance. Let it breath though for a few hours and you will be treated to one of the best values in the store!

Hi Bob - I just posted this in the "Grocery Outlet" group:
Hello - I am shamelessly promoting two wines I just got placed into the Grocery Outlet chain. I don't know if you've noticed, but they are really making some good moves wine-wise, and I'm happy to be a part of that move. I am an importer based in California, mostly Italian, but other countries as well. The two wines hitting the stores this week and next are under the label "Le Corbine" which is a custom label for the Vecchia Cantina coop in Tuscany. I sell their full price label, Poggio Stella to restaurants in San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Palo Alto and assorted other cities in California. This wine is the same as the Poggio Stella label, but as all wineries do, they've bottled up a ton for cheaper distribution. We're the lucky ones! The Chianti is a DOCG ready to drink now or put down for 3-5 years. The Rosso is a Sangiovese/Canaiolo blend. The retail is likely to be 5.99/bottle, which is WAY below normal retail. Plenty of the Seattle area stores wil lhave it for a while, most importantly the Madrona location, and Oregon and California will be receiving their allotment in a week or so. Check them out! Cheers, Bob Lambert

Two New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs from the San Jose Monterey Road GO.
Sam's Creek 2008 and Mystery Creek 2008.
Both were a very good value @ $3.99
My preference is for the Sam's Creek. It has a slightly bigger nose and finishes with more crispness.
The Grocery Outlet wine offerings vary between locations. You may find these at your local GO market, or not. Jed

I agree! The Sam's Creek is also now a dollar less. At $2.99 a bottle is represents in my book anyway the best under $3.00 white wine available anywhere. PERIOD!

Found two more Outstanding Values Today!

Les Arpents 2007 Vin de Pays du Val de Loire (Poor Man's Vouvrey) Lovely apple/floral nose gives way to good acidity and varietal character with a nice round lingering finish easily worth $12. for ony $2.99 A perfect wine for light faire. Should drink well for at least the next year.

Billyrock Station 2006 Petit Verdot, rarely seen a varietal bottling this wine is medium bodied with hints of cherry and vanilla in the nose, giving way to an almost Pinot Noir character and a nice touch of oak, light tannins and smooth finish. A very interesting and good wine. again, only $2.99
