Two Red Wines under $10 sure to delight
Here are two very satisfying red wines under $10 that I found at Safeway this past week. Safeway always seems to have a wine sale each and every day of the week. Sometimes it is a bit confusing, especially at checkout. The register cranks out a long tape and the checker announces how much money you have saved. We have said this time and again, you must know your wine prices to really know if you are getting a wine deal at Safeway. I think these two wines qualify as legit wine bargains.
Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red 2010 Safeway – $9.49, BevMo $10.99
Il Gioiello Block 1 Vineyard 2007 – $9.90 Safeway
This is a little winery tucked away in the Sierra Foothills in remote Fiddletown in Amador County. We visited this winery back in 2007 when the winery was just getting started. I was surprised to see this wine at the Burlingame Safeway, because the winery production is on the boutique size with the majority of the wine sold at the winery or their online store. At this price point this is a excellent bargain wine. It reminds me very much of one of our favorite bargain Zins, also from Amador County, the Sobon Rocky Top Zinfandel. The Il Gioiello wine has a very nice aroma and characteristics of spice, cherry, and a tad of earth. It is a delicious Zin, and my guess is that it will sell out quickly once the word is out. Unlike the Shannon Ridge above, you might only find this wine in the Safeway stores that have a large wine department. I give it a very strong 88 Points. By the way, if you buy 6 bottles the price drops to $9 a bottle. That is exactly where I am headed this week.

Great wines! I went to the Burlingame Safeway early in the week and purchased 3 of each of the Shannon Ridge and the Ill G. I was not disappointed at all. I went back to the B Safeway yesterday to purchase 3 more of each of the wines. The Shannon R was available but only one bottle of the Ill G was on the shelf. The wine manager was on the floor and he said more of the Ill G would be in by the end of the week. I found him very knowledgeable about wine and was quite impressed. I would expect someone of his calibre to be at a K&L type fine wine store. In fact The Burlingame Safeway wine section is quite extensive.
I am glad you liked the wines. I was at the Safeway store in Woodlake and talked to two ladies stocking the wine shelves for a distributor. They told me the Burlingame Safeway has the best wine department of Safeway stores in the area.

Cheers to these two wonderful wines. I am the wine steward at the Burlingame Safeway and both these wines have gone down even further in price. 2008 is now in as the 2007 is sold out. 2008 Il Gioiello is even better if you can believe it. But hurry on this wine as we expect to be sold out of the 2008 this month. I am keeping extra cases on the floor.
